Goalkeeper Afi Amenyaku emerged as the hero on Saturday evening, delivering a stunning performance as Ghana defeated arch-rivals Nigeria in a thrilling penalty shootout to claim the championship title in the inaugural WAFU B U-20 Girls Cup of Nations.
The victory was the culmination of a highly successful campaign for the host nation, who not only organised the tournament in Kumasi but also emerged victorious on their home turf at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Amenyaku’s remarkable goalkeeping skills came to the forefront as she saved three Nigerian penalties, securing a decisive 3-1 victory in the shootout after a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
Black Princesses captain Stella Nyamekye, demonstrated her leadership by opening the scoring in the 37th minute with a well-converted penalty kick, giving her team the much-needed advantage. However, Nigeria managed to equalise in the dying minutes of regular time, setting the stage for the dramatic penalty shootout.
Ghana emerged triumphant in the shootout, sparking celebrations that will undoubtedly continue late into the night.
