Ghana etched their name into the history books on Wednesday after defeating Panama 1-0 in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at BMO Field in Toronto.

The victory made the Black Stars the African nation with the most wins in FIFA World Cup history, moving to six victories from just 16 matches on football’s biggest stage.

Ghana overtook Nigeria at the top of the continent’s all-time standings. While the Super Eagles also boast six World Cup victories, they required 21 matches to reach that mark, giving the Black Stars a higher record.

The landmark achievement was secured through a disciplined and determined display against a Panama side that dominated large portions of the contest.

The Central Americans controlled much of the possession and created the better openings, particularly during a difficult first half for Ghana.

However, the Black Stars improved significantly after the break, showing greater composure and purpose as they gradually grew into the game.

Their persistence paid off late in the encounter when Caleb Yirenkyi arrived inside the box to tap home Brandon Thomas-Asante’s cross and hand Ghana a priceless victory.

The result not only gave Ghana a winning start to their Group L campaign but also cemented their place as Africa’s most successful nation in FIFA World Cup history.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to a crucial showdown against England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 as they look to strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stages.
