Ghana have suffered another setback in their already difficult 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, dropping five places to 70th in the latest FIFA World Ranking. The Black Stars have fallen from 65th after losing 25.73 ranking points, with their disappointing start to the AFCON qualifiers contributing significantly to the decline.Ghana are now ranked 14th among African countries in the latest standings released on Wednesday, October 7.The latest ranking was calculated from 338 mens international matches played since the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 19, with results from competitions including the UEFA and Concacaf Nations Leagues and the 2027 AFCON qualifiers taken into account.Ghanas position was hit particularly hard by their opening two AFCON qualifying results. The Black Stars began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Cte dIvoire in Bouak before suffering an even more damaging 4-2 loss to The Gambia on home soil. Those consecutive defeats have left Ghana without a point from their opening two matches and facing an uphill battle to get their qualification campaign back on track. The disappointing run also contributed to the end of Carlos Queirozs tenure as Black Stars head coach. The Portuguese coach departed by mutual agreement after managing just one victory in seven matches. The latest FIFA ranking setback adds to Ghanas recent struggles on the international stage. The four-time African champions also missed out on qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, making their current decline an increasing concern. The Black Stars will have an opportunity to respond when the AFCON qualifiers resume in November, with back-to-back matches against Somalia providing Ghana with a chance to collect maximum points and rebuild momentum.Somalia are currently ranked 200th in the world, leaving Ghana with an opportunity to improve their position if they can produce positive results in both encounters. At the top of the African rankings, Morocco remain the continents highest-ranked nation, occupying seventh place globally. Senegal are next in 18th, while Cte dIvoire have climbed into 29th position. Nigeria, meanwhile, have dropped four places to 30th.For Ghana, the immediate priority will be turning their AFCON qualifying fortunes around before the next FIFA ranking update provides another measure of the Black Stars progress.
