Ghanaian journalist and public servant, Georgina Afia Kwarteng is appealing for financial support as she battles a life-threatening recurrence of cancer and seeks urgent medical treatment abroad.

The 40-year-old has been diagnosed with Relapsed Nodular Sclerosing Hodgkin Lymphoma (Stage IIB), a form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. After undergoing six cycles of chemotherapy at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and achieving remission, Georgina’s cancer has unfortunately returned.

She is currently undergoing salvage chemotherapy while preparing for an Autologous Stem Cell (Bone Marrow) Transplant, which doctors have identified as her best chance for long-term recovery.

Sharing details of her medical journey, Georgina told Peacefmonline; “After completing six cycles of chemotherapy at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and achieving remission, my cancer unfortunately relapsed. I am currently receiving salvage chemotherapy while preparing for an Autologous Stem Cell (Bone Marrow) Transplant, which my doctors have recommended as my best chance for long-term recovery.”

A specialist review by Dr. Ankit Jitani, Consultant Hematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist in India, has recommended further assessment, immunotherapy-based salvage treatment, and an Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant once remission is achieved. However, the cost of the recommended treatment, including travel and related medical expenses, has placed a huge financial burden on Georgina and her family.

She needs to raise approximately US$25,000 to access the treatment that could help save her life.

An appeal has therefore been made to individuals, churches, corporate organizations, non-governmental organizations, friends, and the general public to support Georgina in her fight against cancer.

“Every contribution, no matter how small, will bring her one step closer to receiving the treatment she urgently needs,” the appeal stated.

Those unable to offer financial assistance have also been encouraged to share her story with their networks to help reach more people who may be willing to support her.
