Former President and Flag Bearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama has marked Ghana’s 67th Independence Anniversary with a call for reflection and action. In a statement, Mr. Mahama urged Ghanaians to contemplate on the nation’s journey while facing what he described as “avoidable tribulations” of economic hardship, uncertainty, and a crisis of leadership.
He invited citizens to acknowledge the struggles that have shaped Ghana’s history, highlighting the sacrifices made by inspirational leaders and forebears, particularly Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. Expressing concern about the current state of affairs, Mr. Mahama lamented that the present situation does not reflect the aspirations for which Ghana’s founders fought.
“As we commemorate the 67th anniversary of our Independence and the freedom that binds us together, I invite you to acknowledge the struggles that have shaped our lives and our dear country, Ghana”, he said.
He drew parallels between colonial oppression and present-day challenges, criticizing the government for its handling of issues such as violence during elections and widespread corruption.
Mr. Mahama emphasized the need for better leadership, governance, and accountability, stressing that Ghana deserves a strong economy that benefits all citizens. He called for unity and determination to overcome obstacles and build a better society for future generations.
“With the right leadership, we shall turn our fortunes around and put Ghana back on track as the Black Star of Africa, as envisioned by those who sacrificed their lives to give us this precious gift of freedom”, he added.
