Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York has visited the family of 24-year-old Ghanaian Joseph Owusu, who was found dead in the United States, as the government pledges to work with American authorities to ensure justice.

The visit, undertaken on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, was on the directive of Ghana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Samuel Yao Kumah.

The delegation was led by Deputy Permanent Representative Ben Dotsei Malor and Consul-General Anthony El-Adas, who conveyed the condolences of the Government of Ghana to the bereaved family.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also joined the engagement by phone, expressing condolences and conveying the support and solidarity of President John Dramani Mahama and the government to Joseph’s mother, Mavis, and other family members.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Mission, Mr Ablakwa said he was shocked and saddened by Joseph’s death, particularly because it followed the killing of 15-year-old Javits, another Ghanaian, in the Bronx, New York.

The Minister assured the family that the government would work with relevant US authorities and agencies to ensure that justice was served.

Joseph worked as a caregiver, supporting persons with disabilities, and also served as a chorister at his local Methodist church. His family described him as a beloved son and brother whose death had devastated them and the wider community.

Reports indicate that Joseph’s body was discovered at a dumpsite in the Bronx on Tuesday, November 3, nearly two weeks after he was reported missing. His death came days after 15-year-old Ghanaian Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong was fatally shot in the same New York borough on October 29. gbcghanaonline.com +1

Joseph’s brother, Kwadwo, has called for a thorough and transparent police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, insisting that anyone found responsible should be brought to justice.

According to the Permanent Mission, police have informed the family that an autopsy is being conducted on Joseph’s body as investigations continue.

The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been established, with the family awaiting the outcome of the police investigation and autopsy.

The latest development follows the death of Javits Frimpong, whose killing also prompted the Ghanaian government to engage US authorities and assure his family of support in seeking justice. Information Services Department +1

The two deaths within days of each other have heightened concern among Ghanaians in New York, particularly in the Bronx, where both incidents occurred.
