Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president Mark Addo says the decision to provide each Ghana Premier League club with GH1 million before the start of the 2026/27 season marks a major step forward in the financing of domestic football.
The GFA announced the financial and incentive package at its 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Thursday.
Speaking to the media after the congress, Mr Addo said the upfront payment was unprecedented and would give clubs greater financial stability as they prepare for the new campaign.
For the first time, each club is receiving like a million cedis before the league starts. That’s unheard of, he said.
The GH1 million base payment is intended to help clubs meet operational costs, including squad building, logistics and other preparations for the season.
Mr Addo said the financial support formed part of a wider effort by the GFA to strengthen the Premier League and increase the value of the competition for participating clubs.
He added that the association was also working to improve the league’s commercial prospects through broadcasting, sponsorship and other revenue opportunities.
The marketing department and the FA continue to work all the time, and as more sponsors come in, we will definitely make sure, he said.
Mr Addo described the Premier League as the GFA’s most important domestic football product and stressed the importance of securing suitable commercial partners.
GPL is our best product, so we have to also make sure that we have the right fit in terms of the right sponsor, he said.
The GH1 million payment forms part of a wider GH9.5 million prize and incentive package for the 2026/27 season.
The league champions will receive GH3 million and a JAC vehicle, while the runners-up, third-placed and fourth-placed teams will receive GH1 million, GH800,000 and GH750,000 respectively.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to begin on 5 September.
