Staff of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) have handed over a fully refurbished four-unit kindergarten classroom block to Republic Road Nursery School in Tema, as part of activities marking the Corporation’s 40th anniversary.
The project, dubbed ‘40-Forward’ and organised under the theme ‘Leaving Footprints in Communities’, was conceived, funded and executed entirely by GNPC staff as a personal initiative outside their official job responsibilities, in a community that has hosted the Corporation’s operational presence for four decades.
For years, pupils of the school had endured deplorable classroom conditions. The block has now undergone a complete overhaul, with new ceilings, tiled floors and an attached washroom facility supported by a dedicated water storage system, transforming the learning environment for the young pupils.
In a further nod to sustainability, all furniture supplied to the classrooms was manufactured from recycled plastic materials, an initiative aimed at exposing the pupils to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices at a formative stage of their development.
Director of Human Resource, Dr Edward Appiah-Brafoh at GNPC, speaking on behalf of the institution’s CEO, described the project as evidence of the collective commitment of GNPC staff to creating lasting social impact beyond their professional duties.
He noted that the anniversary milestone offered an opportunity not only to celebrate GNPC’s journey and achievements, but also to reflect on its impact, and to consider how the Corporation’s presence had touched the communities that had hosted and supported it over the decades.
“Sometimes the answer lay in major national projects, and other times in a classroom block such as the one being commissioned, since every child who passed through its doors carried potential that would shape a future none could fully predict today” he said.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Ebi Bright, praised GNPC staff for spearheading the initiative and expressed appreciation for their contribution to education in the municipality. She said the Corporation’s staff driven philosophy of “Leaving Footprints in Communities” should serve as a continuous call to action for organisations and individuals to contribute meaningfully to community development.
The Headmistress of the school, Mavis Adatsi Jessie, expressed gratitude to GNPC and urged pupils to make good use of the new facility. She also encouraged teachers and school administrators to prioritise its maintenance to ensure the infrastructure served future generations of pupils.
Lubaabat Habib-Jawulaa, Manager Sustainability & Corporate Social Investment concluded by commending every staff member, volunteer and contractor who contributed to the initiative, as well as all stakeholders and partners whose collaboration ensured the success of the project.
He then officially declared the facility commissioned for use by Republic Road Nursery School, urging the pupils to be good boys and girls, listen to their teachers, study well and make good use of the facility.
For the pupils who now occupy the colourful classrooms, the project represents more than renovated infrastructure. As GNPC marks four decades of operations, the 40-Forward initiative demonstrates that the Corporation’s legacy extends beyond energy production to empowering dreams and shaping the next generation of Ghanaian leaders.
