Government announces renovation of National Theatre

The National Theatre of Ghana is set for a major facelift as the government announces plans for its renovation.

The announcement was made by Mr. Divine Owusu Ansah, the representative of the Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, during the World Theatre Day celebration at the School of Theatre Arts, University of Ghana, on March 27, 2025.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Owusu Ansah emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing the National Theatre to meet modern standards. He acknowledged the theatre’s critical role in Ghana’s creative economy, serving as a hub for theatrical performances, cultural showcases, and artistic innovation.

“The National Theatre has been a pillar of Ghana’s arts industry for decades, but it is time for an upgrade. This renovation will ensure that our creative talents have a world-class facility to showcase their work,” he stated.

The announcement was met with excitement from actors, playwrights, and other stakeholders in the industry. Many expressed hope that the renovation would elevate the standard of theatre in Ghana, attract international productions, and boost tourism.
