Government has issued a GH¢25 million payment to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), according to Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee.

The payment comes after WAEC warned that delays in clearing the government’s GH¢118 million debt might postpone the release of the 2024 WASSCE results.

Speaking on Citi FM, Dr. Apaak said the payment was a positive move but noted that it is far from enough to solve WAEC’s financial struggles.

“The government has issued a cheque for GH¢25 million, but the total debt is GH¢118 million. This amount is less than half of what is owed and will not fully address the problem,” Dr. Apaak revealed.

John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, stated that the money would be used to pay technicians to repair faulty scanners. These scanners are crucial for marking objective exam questions.

WAEC continues to appeal for the remaining funds to ensure smooth operations and timely results for students.
