Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan says former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah will make his list of best players to ever play football ahead of five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has struggled to find form recently at Manchester United which resulted in a move to Saudi Arabian outfit Al Nassr. The former Sporting Lisbon man was even dropped on a couple of occasions in Portugal’s World Cup games in 2022 in a tournament which saw his fiercest competitor Lionel Messi lead Argentina to win the title.

Regardless, the player is still recognized as one of the finest in the football world, having won five UEFA Champions League trophies and guiding Portugal to the European Championship in 2016 as well as the UEFA Nations League in 2019.

Asamoah Gyan, on the other hand, feels that George Weah, who won the Ballon d’Or while playing for AC Milan, is a greater player than Ronaldo.

The former Sunderland striker first excluded Ronaldo’s name from the list of players who impressed him at the 2022 World Cup, implying that the Al Nassr forward was unfortunate and had a bad tournament.

When he was further quizzed as to whether the Portugal captain would be considered in his greatest of all time list, Gyan said, “I have to choose George Weah.”

“He is the only African who has won the Balon d’Or. And then, in his time, there were a lot of durable defenders. No disrespect to this generation but those times,[had better defenders].” he said on TV3 New Day.

Gyan has not played since 2021 when he last appeared for Ghana Premier League club Legon Cities. He has yet to formally declare his retirement.

He currently holds a UEFA License B coaching certificate.
