Heavy security as EC resumes re-collation of results for nine constituencies

The Electoral Commission (EC) has resumed the re-collation of results for nine contested constituencies, with heightened security measures in place at its Greater Accra Regional Office in Ridge, Accra.

The exercise, aimed at ensuring transparency and accuracy in the final election results, follows political tensions and public concern over alleged irregularities in the collation process during the general elections.

The constituencies under re-collation include Nsawam Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, Techiman South, and Dome Kwabenya. These areas have been the subject of disputes, and the EC is working to resolve any discrepancies in the results.

Tightened Security Measures

Armed police and military personnel have been deployed around the EC office to maintain order and protect election officials, party agents, and observers. Security checkpoints have been set up at entry points, ensuring that access to the collation centre is limited to authorized individuals only.

This heavy security presence is a direct response to the sensitivity of the process, with supporters of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seen gathering in the vicinity, eagerly awaiting updates. The EC has invited local and international observers, along with civil society organizations, to monitor the re-collation exercise and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

Commitment to Transparency

In a press briefing held on Thursday, December 20, the EC assured the public that the re-collation process would be conducted fairly, with all necessary precautions to ensure the credibility of the results. The Commission emphasized that it is dedicated to resolving any concerns regarding the previous election outcomes and upholding the principles of democracy.

The re-collation comes after an Accra High Court ruling on December 21, which directed the EC to finalize the election results for six constituencies, including Tema Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Ablekuma North, Ahafo Ano North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central.
