American actor Danny Glover has revealed that he has been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years, disclosing that he received his diagnosis shortly after being honoured with an Oscar recognition in 2022.
The 79-year-old said the condition has gradually affected his movement, speech and memory, though he continues to remain active.
Speaking in a pre-taped interview aired on NBC, Glover said, “I can live with it in a sense,” adding that he understands things will continue to change as the condition progresses. The conversation, conducted by former NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt and featured on The Today Show, also included contributions from members of his family, who joined him in speaking publicly about his diagnosis.
Best known for his roles in the Lethal Weapon franchise alongside Mel Gibson and in The Color Purple, Glover’s career spans more than four decades and over 170 screen credits. His daughter, Mandisa Glover, said the decision to speak openly about his condition is intended to help him maintain control of his own narrative while also contributing to broader awareness around the disease.

Glover also reflected on his long career and his work as an actor and activist, noting that “art becomes a reframe, a way of looking at” the world’s challenges. His revelation comes as Alzheimer’s continues to affect an estimated 7 million people in the United States over the age of 65, with older Black Americans statistically facing higher risk.
