Ghanaian gospel musician Kofi Owusu Peprah has expressed surprise after winning the Best Urban Contemporary Song category at the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

It will be recalled that the musician picked up the award with his song Big God Afro, beating a competitive lineup of artistes in the category.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning Show, Kofi Owusu Peprah said he did not expect to win, considering the calibre of artistes he was up against.

“Sincerely, I didn’t think I would win the Best Urban Contemporary Song, considering the category and the people in it,” he said.

He noted that although he received assurances from supporters about voting, he managed his expectations ahead of the big day and announcement to avoid disappointment.

According to him, the category was filled with strong entries, making his eventual win even more surprising. However, he was quick to add that he also felt he was a worthy winner, explaining that his song was widely played and could be heard everywhere one went, which, in his view, reflected its strong impact and popularity.

He also acknowledged the other nominees in the category, describing them as equally deserving winners due to the quality of their songs.

The Best Urban Contemporary Song category featured Ebefa (Aye Yo), Ewura Abena, N2, Diana Hamilton ft. Ntokozo Mbambo & Elder Mireku (Aha Ye – The Good Place), Scott Evans (Ready), Kofi Karikari (Stamina), Carl Clottey ft. Luigi Maclean (Yehowa), and Kofi Owusu Peprah.
