Popular Ghanaian musician Wendy Shay has opened up about her memories of the late Ebony Reigns, revealing her admiration for the late singer before her passing.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Kafui Dey, Wendy Shay recounted how she first met Ebony in Kwahu. According to the ‘Uber Driver’ hitmaker, her uncle organized an event in Kwahu, where she had the chance to meet Ebony after admiring her from afar, especially because she connected with her songs and those of Shatta Wale

Wendy Shay explained that although she was present at the event, she did not get the opportunity to watch Ebony perform. She said she was busy coordinating artistes and other activities, leaving her with only a few seconds to greet Ebony and take a picture with her.

When asked where she was upon hearing news of Ebony’s death in Death of Ebony Reigns in February 2018, Wendy Shay revealed she was in Germany at the time. She described the moment as heartbreaking, especially considering the late singer’s rising success.

“I was in Germany and it was heartbreaking. Because we all knew she was heading towards a great future. So it was heartbreaking. My mum informed me. I had woken up on the train heading to work when she sent it to me. I mean it was devastating. A big loss to the family and the industry,” she said.

Responding to whether Ghanaians were hesitant to accept her because of their love for Ebony after she was signed by Bullet, Wendy Shay stated that she could not speak for the public.

“I am not in the right place to speak for Ghanaians. They had lost a gem, her friends, loved ones, and fans, including me. I know how the news of her death made us feel. But once again, I am not Bullet. He is the one who signed me. He is the record label executive and knew what was best for the label at the time. There were other people, but he chose me. So unless you ask him what he saw, I can’t say,” she explained.

When asked what she believes Bullet saw in her, Wendy Shay pointed to her resilience.

“Probably what we are seeing today, the strength I didn’t know I had. He likely knew what the next artiste would face and needed someone who was never going to give up,” she added.
