Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has responded to critics who labelled the current Black Stars squad as one of the weakest in the nation’s history following the team’s impressive start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after Ghana’s goalless draw against England, Opoku said the players were proving their doubters wrong with their performances on football’s biggest stage.
“Some people have said this is the worst Ghana squad in history, but we are showing what we can do,” he said after the Group L encounter.
The Black Stars produced a disciplined display to frustrate England and secure a valuable point, extending their unbeaten run in the tournament. The result follows Ghana’s opening 1-0 victory over Panama.
With four points from two matches, Ghana are well placed to qualify for the knockout stage. The Black Stars have also maintained a perfect defensive record, remaining one of the few teams yet to concede a goal at the tournament.
