Highly-rated coach Johnson Smith is on the verge of being named the new head coach of Nations FC as the club prepares for a demanding 2026/27 season.

The experienced tactician is expected to return to the Abrankese-based side, this time as head coach to replace Stephen Frimpong Manso, having previously served the club in an assistant role.

Smith faces the unique challenge of leading Nations FC in the Division One League after the club’s relegation from the Ghana Premier League, while also guiding the FA Cup holders in their maiden appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Although Nations FC dropped out of the top flight, their triumph in the MTN FA Cup secured the club a place in next season’s continental competition, presenting a rare opportunity to compete in Africa despite playing in Ghana’s second tier.

The veteran coach arrives with a wealth of experience, having worked with several clubs across the Ghanaian football landscape.

He has previously been part of the technical teams at Asante Kotoko and Karela United and recently coached Basake Holy Stars. Smith also serves as an assistant coach of Ghana’s U-20 national team, the Black Satellites.

His expected appointment signals the club’s determination to make an immediate return to the Premier League while remaining competitive on the continental stage. An official announcement is expected once the final details of the agreement are concluded.
