Former Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah has spoken about his growing passion for photography, describing the experience of working behind the camera as both rewarding and eye-opening.
The former Black Stars centre-back, who represented Ghana at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, has recently been seen capturing moments during the ongoing 2026 World Cup, sparking admiration from football fans and photography enthusiasts alike.
Speaking on Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV about his new experience, Mensah said being behind the lens has given him a completely different perspective compared to life as a professional footballer.
“Oh, it’s amazing. I’ve seen the difference though. When you’re in front of it, you realise you’re being captured. But when you’re behind it, you want to capture moments in the game where people are not watching so they will go like, ‘Wow,’ when they see it. So I’m grateful to be able to capture those moments,” he said.
The former Udinese, Granada and Columbus Crew defender also revealed that his work has received praise from experienced photographers, something he considers a huge encouragement.
“Oh, I do get compliments from professional photographers. They’ve done it for so long and anytime they see what I’m creating, they are so impressed. I haven’t done it for long, so I’m grateful for those compliments, but I’m still in the learning process.”
Although he remains an active footballer, Mensah continues to embrace photography as a passion, with his work during the World Cup offering fans a glimpse into another side of his creativity.
