Ashesi University karate athlete Kevin Bigirimana won silver in the Lightweight Division at the 2026 Japanese Ambassador Karate-do Championships on October 24.

Bigirimana secured victories in his first three bouts before losing the final by a single point to an opponent from Kokusai Karate Club.

His performance earned him a silver medal at the competition, highlighting his ability to combine academic pursuits with sporting excellence.

Ashesi Karate Dojo coach Dickson Acolatse praised Bigirimana’s achievement, describing it as evidence of what students can accomplish through consistency and determination.

“As a coach at Ashesi Karate Dojo, Kevin’s silver-medal achievement is proof that with consistency and determination, students can pursue excellence both academically and in sports,” Acolatse said.

“It shows you do not have to choose between academic excellence and sporting achievement. You can develop both.”

The Japanese Ambassador’s Cup Karate-do Championships brings karate athletes together to compete across different divisions, providing a platform for them to demonstrate their skills and discipline.
