Ghanas Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has voiced serious concerns over the growing number of low-quality astroturf pitches being constructed across the country.Speaking during an appearance on SportyFMs SoccerChat programme, the minister warned that poor artificial playing surfaces could expose footballers to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries if not checked.I’m very worried about the inferior astroturfs that we’re constructing and making our players play on very hard surfaces, leading to future ACL injuries. If you’ll not do grass pitches or proper astroturfs, then let them play on the ‘sakora’ parks, Kofi Adams said. The minister urged individuals, organisations and agencies involved in the construction of astroturf facilities to prioritise quality standards to ensure player safety.Over the past eight years, Ghana has witnessed a significant rise in the construction of astroturf pitches across different communities as part of efforts to improve grassroots football and talent development. While several of the facilities have been praised for meeting acceptable standards, others have been criticised for poor quality and unsafe playing conditions.
