Laweh University College has taken a significant step toward promoting cross-cultural education by partnering with Shanghai Open University to establish a Chinese Language Centre on its campus in Accra.
The centre, located within Laweh’s modern facilities, aims to promote the study of the Chinese language and culture in Ghana. This strategic partnership will provide individuals, businesses and the general public with access to cutting-edge Chinese language courses.
The LAWEH-SOU Chinese Language Centre will offer a range of courses, including Chinese Language—Beginner Level (HSK 1), Chinese Language—Elementary Level (HSK 2), Chinese Language—Intermediate Level (HSK 3), and Chinese Language—Advanced Level (HSK 4).
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Goski Alabi, Founder of LAWEH, said: “We are excited to bridge the cultural and linguistic divide between Ghana and China through this innovative partnership”.
Prof. Alabi said the programme is expected to provide Ghanaian students with a valuable opportunity to immerse themselves in Shanghai’s rich culture and educational landscape, foster cross-cultural understanding and promote academic and personal growth.
She expressed deep gratitude to Shanghai Open University for this opportunity, which will allow the students to embark on an exciting journey of learning and cultural exchange.
During the ceremony, the Deputy Ambassador of China to Ghana, Mr. Li Yang, highlighted the robust China-Ghana bilateral relationship, noting that the two countries recently elevated their ties to a strategic partnership.
He noted that trade and economic cooperation between the nations continue to deepen, with China remaining Ghana’s largest trading partner and main source of investment.
According to him, the launch of the centre is expected to significantly boost the teaching of the Chinese language in Ghana and contribute to strengthening the long-standing friendship and people-to-people exchanges between China and Ghana.
The Deputy Ambassador also noted the growing popularity of the Chinese language in Ghana, with the establishment of the third Confucius Institute at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology last year.
He added that thousands of Ghanaian students are now learning Chinese, and over 4,600 Ghanaian students are currently studying in China, ranking third among African countries.
Vice President of the Shanghai Open University, Zhang Jin, also expressed her deepest appreciation to all who contributed to the setting up of the centre, adding that it will go a long way to deepen the relationship between both countries.
