Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has defended her casting as Helen of Troy in The Odyssey, saying critics should remember the film is based on mythology.
The actress said she supports director Christopher Nolan and his vision for the upcoming adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.
Speaking to Elle magazine, Nyong’o described the production as “grand” and said its cast reflects the modern world. She added that she was not focused on defending herself against criticism, saying backlash would continue whether she responded to it or not.

Her casting has sparked debate online, with billionaire Elon Musk among those criticising the decision to cast a black actress as Helen of Troy. Musk argued that changing the race of a character from a “foundational work of European literature” was inappropriate and later accused Nolan of insulting Greek culture. The director has not publicly addressed the controversy.
The Odyssey is one of Nolan’s most anticipated projects following the success of Oppenheimer, which won multiple Oscars in 2024. The film also stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, and is scheduled for release in July next year.
