President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to develop the historic Osu Castle and its surrounding areas into a vibrant cultural and tourism hub.

Speaking during the State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, the President gave his government’s commitment to ensuring that the Osu Castle, once the seat of government, becomes a center of historical and cultural significance.

“We will develop the Osu Castle, the former seat of Government, and the area surrounding it as a tourist attraction, a pedestrian precinct, with arts and craft markets, and a jewellery and gold market,” Mahama declared.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reposition Ghana as a leading heritage tourism destination, leveraging its historical landmarks to attract both domestic and international visitors.

The Osu Castle, also known as Fort Christiansborg, is one of the most historically significant sites in Ghana.

It stands as a testament to centuries of colonial rule, the transatlantic slave trade, and Ghana’s journey to independence.

The Castle was originally built by the Danish in the 1660s when they established a trading post along the Gold Coast.

Initially constructed as a fort for trade, it soon became a hub for the slave trade, where countless Africans were held before being transported across the Atlantic.

The Castle is also associated with key historical events, including the signing of important treaties and agreements between European powers and local chiefs. Its walls have witnessed the tragedies of slavery, the struggles for independence, and the governance of post-colonial Ghana.
