President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the need for education and technical training to equip young people with practical skills to address national development challenges.

He said academic knowledge must be applied to solving real-world problems and improving the living conditions of communities.

President Mahama made the remarks while delivering his acceptance speech after receiving an honorary doctorate from the Russian University of Transport in Moscow.

He said Ghana was working to strengthen the quality of education by supporting universities and technical institutions to produce graduates who could think independently, work competently and adapt to changing demands.

The President also emphasised the importance of technical and vocational education, scientific research and stronger cooperation between educational institutions and industry.

According to him, the transport sector illustrates the direct relationship between specialised knowledge and people’s everyday lives.

He explained that efficient transport systems help farmers move produce to markets, enable workers to reach their workplaces and allow businesses to transport goods more effectively.

President Mahama said Ghana needed skilled engineers, researchers and transport professionals to improve safety, reduce the cost of moving goods, maintain infrastructure and respond to emerging economic and environmental challenges.

He encouraged students to pursue their professions with dedication and integrity, while remaining conscious of the people who depend on the services and systems they help develop.
