Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to advancing the Free Senior High School (SHS) bill despite the fierce opposition from the Minority in Parliament.
He declared that the Majority Caucus stands firm in ensuring the passage of the bill, emphasizing the non-negotiable nature of the free SHS policy.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Effutu MP underscored that the policy would be implemented regardless of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ‘s objections. He lambasted the NDC for their knee-jerk opposition to the bill without even reviewing its contents, drawing stark comparisons to their past resistance against the original Free SHS policy and other social initiatives.
“We are resolute in our mission to enact legislation that cements free SHS as a fundamental policy. Despite the NDC’s opposition, we are committed to seeing it through,” declared Afenyo-Markin.
The proposed bill aims to institutionalize the Free SHS policy, ensuring its continuity across successive governments and preventing its discontinuation. Despite initial scepticism, the NDC and Minority have indicated a potential shift in stance, expressing readiness to support the bill and advocating for dedicated funding mechanisms. This shift could be a significant development in the parliamentary debate over the bill.
Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, affirmed the Minority’s intention to scrutinize the bill thoroughly upon its presentation in Parliament.
