The Ghana Insurance University College (GIU) has officially attained university status, nearly two decades after it was established to train professionals for Ghana’s insurance industry.

The announcement was made during the institution’s 19th Graduation Dinner and Awards Ceremony held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

Speaking at the event, Malta’s High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Ronald Micaleff, praised the institution’s leadership for its role in developing professionals for Ghana’s financial and insurance sectors.

“Nineteen years is not merely a measure of time,” he said. “It represents nearly two decades of commitment to knowledge, professional excellence, innovation, and service to Ghana’s financial and insurance sectors.”

Mr Micaleff said institutions such as GIU help build trust and resilience within society by producing skilled professionals.

He also highlighted the growing relationship between Ghana and Malta, particularly within education, finance and insurance.

According to him, Malta’s success as an international financial and insurance centre was driven by investment in education, regulation, specialised training and international cooperation.

The Acting Commissioner of Insurance and Chairperson of GIU, Dr Abiba Zakariah, urged graduates to uphold professionalism, integrity and continuous learning as they enter the next phase of their careers.

She said the insurance industry required professionals who are prepared to adapt to innovation and changing industry demands.

Dr Zakariah also commended the institution for its contribution to developing human capital for Ghana’s insurance sector.

The Rector of GIU, Dr Richard Okyere, announced that the institution is now affiliated with the University of Ghana and will begin enrolling students for new academic programmes from September.

He said programmes including BSc in Actuarial Science with Insurance and BSc in Computer and Data Science with insurance-related courses would begin in the next academic year.

A speech delivered on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, confirmed the affiliation and pledged support for the institution’s growth.

The ceremony also included the swearing-in of members of the Governing Council and Academic Board.

Several former insurance commissioners, industry executives and stakeholders were honoured for their contributions to the growth of the institution since it was established as the Ghana Insurance College in 2006.
