Former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has been named the new head coach of the Uruguay national team.
The 67-year-old Argentine, who had been without a job since his departure from Elland Road in February 2022, will now take charge of the two-time champions.
Bielsa’s recent months were filled with discussions with Bournemouth and Everton regarding their vacant managerial positions.
However, it is the opportunity to lead his home country that has ultimately enticed him back to the helm. Uruguay had a disappointing World Cup campaign in Qatar, failing to progress beyond the group stage.
Bielsa’s legacy at Leeds United remains intact, as he is still highly regarded by the club’s supporters for his role in guiding them back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.
Prior to his tenure at Leeds, he managed clubs in France, Italy, Spain, and his native Argentina. Additionally, he led the Chilean national team for four years from 2007 to 2011.
The Uruguay national team had been under interim head coach Marcelo Broli since February, following the resignation of Diego Alonso, who had taken charge in 2021.
Currently sitting at 16th in FIFA’s world rankings, Uruguay will be counting on Bielsa’s expertise and tactical acumen to elevate their performance on the international stage.
