Young Ghanaian Innovators Defeat 26 Teams from 19 Countries to Secure Historic Robotics Victory in Michigan, USA

Out of 26 teams from 19 countries, Ghana has emerged as Champions at the just-ended 2026 Robofest World Championships held in Michigan, USA, outperforming competitors from China, Taiwan, Canada, Mexico, the USA, Hong Kong, Greece, Macau, South Korea and several other countries.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to how a dedicated group of engineers in Ghana is grooming the next generation of problem-solvers through robotics, engineering, and hands-on innovation. Congratulations to the Ghana Junior Team, represented by young innovators Faiz Sornyiina ABDUL-WAHAB, Tiana Lilian Naa-Chardey TAYLOR, Israel Yeboah AWUAH, Inaaya KHAN, and Aalia MEHREEN from Mikrobot Academy, with support from the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation, Brownstone Construction, the Ghana AI Research Network, CSIR-Institute for Scientific and Technological Information, and the Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab.

Mikrobot Academy is a private robotics and STEM club focused on nurturing and sustaining young learners’ interest in STEM-related careers aligned with the workforce demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The academy complements traditional classroom learning with apprenticeship-based, hands-on engineering experiences built around miniaturized real-world problems that engineers solve every day.

Its facilitators are practicing engineers who bring real industry experience to learners between the ages of 8 and 15, exposing them to practical problem-solving and innovation at an early stage. Learners are also benchmarked against global standards through international competitions such as the World Robot Olympiad and the Robofest World Championships, where national champions from different countries compete for global honors.

At the 2026 Robofest World Championships, Team Apex from Mikrobot Academy, made up of Faiz Sornyiina ABDUL-WAHAB, Tiana Lilian Naa-Chardey TAYLOR, Israel Yeboah AWUAH, Inaaya KHAN, and Aalia MEHREEN, emerged as Global Champions in the Junior Division, proving the effectiveness of this practical and immersive approach to skills development. In another impressive performance for Ghana, a team from Right to Dream Academy secured second place in the Senior Division.

This marks the first time Ghana has won the Robofest Junior World Championship title. Ghana, however, has previously recorded success at the senior level, with teams from Methodist Girls SHS and Prempeh College winning world championship titles in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Established in 2014, Mikrobot Academy has steadily grown into a strong pipeline for nurturing high-quality young talent who are making meaningful contributions in academia, engineering, and industry. This success has been greatly strengthened by the support of Brownstone Construction Firm, whose investment in youth development continues to make a significant impact.

Brownstone is among the few companies that recognize that the children we empower today are the future engineers and innovators who will solve some of Ghana’s most complex challenges. The company places strong emphasis on building local capacity by prioritizing locally trained talent and partnering with Mikrobot Academy to provide internship opportunities that extend learners’ development beyond classroom and robotics training.

It truly takes a village to achieve such success. This journey has been made possible through the technical support of engineers from CSIR, GAINS, and RAIL; the financial support of Brownstone Construction Firm; and the national coordination efforts of the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation (GRAF).

As Ghana celebrates this historic victory, Mikrobot Academy and its partners look forward to scaling this impact by expanding their practical STEM and robotics development model into more schools and communities across the country.
