The Director of Communications for the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has been arrested by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Kotoka International Airport.
According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Aboagye was arrested on Sunday, July 12, 2026, by EOCO officers with the assistance of officers from the Ghana Immigration Service and taken into custody.
The circumstances surrounding the arrest have triggered concerns from the NPP, with the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, alleging that Mr Aboagye’s lawyers have been denied access to him and that his whereabouts have not been disclosed.
In a statement, Mr Kodua said no charges had been preferred against Mr Aboagye, describing the development as an act of intimidation rather than a legitimate law enforcement process.
He noted that the arrest occurred only hours after Mr Aboagye announced his intention to contest for the position of Director of Communications of the NPP.
The NPP General Secretary further described Mr Aboagye as one of the party’s prominent voices, adding that he has been critical of the government’s handling of issues including illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The party has consequently demanded that EOCO either release Mr Aboagye immediately or charge him and present him before a court of competent jurisdiction.
It also called for unrestricted access to his lawyers and family, citing Article 14(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the rights of persons in custody.
Mr Aboagye currently serves as the Director of Communications for the campaign of the New Patriotic Party’s 2028 flagbearer and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
