Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria Limited (DPAN) has begun local assembly of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUV models at its greenfield facility in Kaduna, marking a new phase in the company’s expansion drive.
The development comes four years after the plant was established and represents a key milestone in the joint venture between Dangote Industries Limited and Peugeot, part of the global Stellantis group.
The addition of the two SUVs is expected to strengthen Peugeot’s presence in Nigeria, complementing the existing Landtrek pick-up already assembled locally. The company says the first units are expected on the market next month.
Both models will be offered in Allure and premium GT trims, powered by a 1.6-litre THP petrol engine producing 163 horsepower and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The partnership, formed six years ago, underscores efforts to deepen local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports. Managing Director for Stellantis South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, Michael Whitfield, said the initiative aligns with broader ambitions under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to build a sustainable automotive industry across the continent. He described Nigeria as a critical market whose scale and consumer demand make it central to the strategy.
DPAN Commercial Director Umar Kaita noted that the move signals a revival of Peugeot’s legacy in Nigeria, where the brand was once a dominant household name from the 1940s through the 1980s. He expressed optimism that local production would restore the visibility of the marque’s “Lion” badge on Nigerian roads.
The Kaduna project also fits into Peugeot’s global strategy, with the brand maintaining a presence in more than 140 countries. While production in Nigeria will focus on internal combustion models to suit current infrastructure, Peugeot continues to expand its electric vehicle offerings in Europe.
DPAN said the investment will give Nigerian consumers access to modern French automotive design and technology, supported by Dangote Group’s industrial capacity and Stellantis’ engineering expertise.
