The NDC is questioning what it says is the Electoral Commission’s resistance to have its Agents at the ongoing limited Voters registration centers record serial numbers of Biometric Verification Devices used for the exercise.
According to the Party, the reluctance of the EC to give in to their call further entrenches their belief of an ulterior motive in the December election.
The NDC has been on the neck of the Electoral Commission for weeks over missing Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits which the party claims could potentially be used to rig the elections. It therefore posed some 35 questions to the Electoral Commission which included questions about the BVR kits. As a follow-up, the NDC requested the EC to release the serial numbers of the kits currently deployed for the ongoing exercise.
At a media briefing in Accra, Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, directed the Party’s Registration Agents across the country to transmit all serial numbers of BVR kits in their districts to the party’s election and IT Directorate, with or without the EC’s approval.
Just before the NDC’s News conference, the Electoral Commission issued a statement seeking to address issues raised by the NDC on the approval of the BVR devices.
The Electoral Commission in the Statement signed by the Acting Director of Public Affairs, Michael Boadu said it is unable to grant the request by the NDC because it is too risky.
According to the Commission the integrity and security of the electoral processes are paramount and each BVR Kit, as a critical component of this process, is assigned a unique serial number.
The Commission said releasing the serial numbers to any external parties, including political entities, poses a substantial risk to the security and integrity of the registration processes.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah responded to the Electoral Commissions statement saying the Commission is exhibiting double standards and not being truthful.
