A 32-year-old Nigerian national, Yusif Dahiru, has been arrested in Accra for allegedly engaging in unauthorised waste collection and extorting money from the public.

The suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Monday, April 13, during an operation near the UTC area in Accra. Gilbert Nii Ankrah of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly confirmed the arrest.

According to Mr Ankrah, authorities acted on a tip-off, leading to Dahiru’s arrest at about 3:00 a.m.

Investigations indicate that Dahiru had stationed himself at an illegal dumping site, where he reportedly posed as an authorised waste collector.

He is said to have been receiving refuse from residents and charging fees under the pretext of offering legitimate waste disposal services.

However, officials clarified that he had no approval or affiliation with the Assembly to operate at the site.

During interrogation, Dahiru allegedly denied being an official waste collector but admitted to assisting individuals by transporting refuse to the site in exchange for money.

He also reportedly claimed he was working under a supervisor, though no such arrangement has been verified.
