Ghanaian counsellor, George Lutterodt, has stirred up a conversation with his recent comments on marriage laws in Ghana. During an appearance on United Showbiz on UTV, aired on Saturday, August 31, 2024, Counselor Lutterodt asserted that there is no law in Ghana that directly forbids marrying multiple people. He pointed out that while legal restrictions against polygamy don’t exist, cultural and religious norms often play a significant role in guiding people’s decisions.

“If you’re polygamous and not a Muslim, avoid civil marriage and opt for a customary marriage instead. Customary marriages can involve more than four spouses, potentially even twenty. You’re allowed to do this because there’s no law in Ghana that stops anyone from marrying as many people as they wish. The only legal issue arises if you fail to take proper care of your spouse, which is covered under the Domestic Violence Act,” Lutterodt explained.

He also shared his thoughts on women’s financial dependence on men, stating that it’s inappropriate for women to rely on men who aren’t their husbands. According to Lutterodt, it’s neither socially nor legally correct for a woman to depend on a man other than her father.

“It’s wrong for any woman to depend on a man. Women weren’t made to rely on men… whether biblically, legally, socially, or traditionally,” he said. “However, it is appropriate for a wife to depend on her husband,” he added.
