Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed optimism regarding Ghana’s economic performance, noting a growth rate of 6.9% in the second quarter of 2024.

He described this achievement as a significant indicator of economic recovery and urged Ghanaians to celebrate this milestone.

According to Bloomberg, in a post on X, Ahiagbah emphasized that the growth rate exceeded estimates by 3.6 percentage points and represented the highest performance in five years.

“Let’s cast politics aside and commend the government for this positive delivery,” he wrote, highlighting the economy’s positive trajectory.

The Ghana Statistical Service reported that the expansion was primarily driven by the services sector, particularly in information and communications, alongside significant contributions from the mining and quarrying industry.

In the second quarter, the services sector accounted for 44.2% of GDP at basic prices, while the industrial sector made up 32.2% and agriculture 23.6%.

Government Statistician Professor Samuel Kobina Annim noted that the information and communications sector experienced robust growth of 12.0% during this period.

The industrial sector also showed strong performance, growing at an annual rate of 9.3%, up from 6.8% in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector accelerated to a growth rate of 5.4%, while the services sector recorded a growth of 5.8%.

However, the cocoa sub-sector remains a concern, experiencing contraction and failing to keep pace with other crops within the agricultural sector.

Professor Annim remarked, “Cocoa did not see expansion like the other crops, indicating challenges within that component.”
