Sammi Awuku has denied claims that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is exploiting State funds and protocols in his bid to become NPP flagbearer.
The Vice President is said to be the “darling boy” of the New Patriotic Party, according to some political critics.
The technical name used to describe him is he is an “establishment candidate”, to wit, the leadership of the NPP are doing everything possible to make Dr. Bawumia’s path to the flagbearer seat easier, hence supporting him with State resources.
But the NLA Chief Executive, Sammi Awuku says those reports are falsehood.
He explained to Kwami Sefa Kayi in an interview on Peace FM’s morning programme “Kokrokoo” the reasons why Dr. Bawumia enjoys State resources even on his campaign trail.
“Let’s be clear. Former President John Mahama will be campaigning for the Presidency of Ghana next year still as a former President with all the protocols accorded him still given. He is entitled to a dispatch. He is entitled to State security protection. The fact that Dr. Bawumia is contesting to be flagbearer doesn’t mean he is still not the Vice President…and in 2024, when Dr. Bawumia becomes the candidate for NPP, he and the President will be campaigning with the suppport of the State Security because they are all entitled to that,” he established.
He also stressed that the privileges that Dr. Bawumia is getting from the State are “a standard operating procedure”.
On the point that the Vice President’s campaign is supported with State funds, Sammi Awuku asked; “What is the proof?”
“I reject any assertion that we are also using State funds. Where are we going to get it from? What happens is that Dr. Bawumia has enormous goodwill,” he volunteered information on how Dr. Bawumia’s campaign is being financed.
