The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is actively working to prevent Kwadjo Asante, the current Member of Parliament for Suhum, from running as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections.

Asante is reportedly considering an independent bid after losing the NPP primary to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, known as Protozoa.

Kofi Tonto, an aide to NPP presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, acknowledged that Asante’s potential independent run presents a “small challenge” for the party, given Suhum’s historical status as an NPP stronghold.

“We do have a small challenge in Suhum because the current MP, who lost the primary to Protozoa, wants to contest as an independent,” Tonto stated on the Asaase Breakfast Show on August 12.

Efforts are being made to reconcile with Asante and bring him back into the party’s fold.

Tonto revealed that Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, spearheads negotiations with Asante.

“Discussions are ongoing to bring him back to the fold. Honourable Bryan Acheampong is leading that charge, and we’ve made significant progress in our engagement with him.

We hope he will rejoin us to strengthen our base for the upcoming election,” Tonto added.

Frank Asiedu Bekoe secured the nomination with 496 votes in the primary election, while Kwadjo Asante received 320 votes.
