Senior New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy has issued a stark call for fundamental internal reform, urging his party to embrace a “bold generational and ideological shift” to regain power in Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
In an open letter, Kennedy argued the party’s revival hinges on actively seeking “new ideas, new humility, and new people” throughout its leadership structure.
Kennedy explicitly dismissed the strategy of searching for a singular “unifying” presidential candidate as insufficient. He contends the NPP’s path back to Jubilee House requires comprehensive renewal across all levels, from grassroots polling stations to the national executive. “Our party cannot just focus on the selection of one great unifying candidate—assuming he or she exists,” Kennedy stated, advocating instead for empowering local structures critical to securing a parliamentary majority.
The party stalwart framed the 2028 election as a pivotal moment centered on “Democratic Accountability.” According to Kennedy’s letter, voters will rigorously assess both major parties. He predicted the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by President John Mahama, will face punishment at the polls if perceived as delivering “business-as-usual governance” instead of the promised accountability and reset. Simultaneously, he warned the NPP risks irrelevance without demonstrating genuine internal reform and ethical leadership renewal.
Kennedy’s prescription for the NPP involves a deliberate generational transition. “We should lean on the ‘NEW’ in our name and look for new humility, new ideas, and new people to lead us,” he wrote, signalling a clear break from figures associated with the party’s 2024 defeat. This renewal, he believes, is essential to win back voters and attract new support ahead of the next electoral contest.
