The New Patriotic Party (NPP) faces internal reckoning as First National Vice Chairman Dankwa Smith Butey, popularly known as Chairman Butey, calls for a complete overhaul of the party’s leadership.

In a candid interview with Sompa FM in Accra, Butey argued that current national executives, including himself, have failed in their duties and should not seek re-election.

Butey pointed to the party’s significant parliamentary losses from 137 seats to 88 as evidence of collective leadership failure. “We were entrusted with protecting and expanding our majority, but we fell short. Why should we return?” he questioned. Emphasizing the need for fresh leadership, he urged delegates to prioritize the party’s future over personal ambitions. “If we truly care about the NPP, we must step aside and allow new leaders to rebuild,” he added.

The vice chairman dismissed attempts to shift blame onto President Akufo-Addo, insisting that national executives bore responsibility for failing to correct course during his administration. “If we saw missteps and stayed silent, we cannot now blame him alone. Leadership requires accountability,” he stated.

His remarks underscore deepening divisions within the NPP as it grapples with its electoral defeat and prepares for internal elections. The call to reject incumbent executives reflects broader discontent over the party’s direction and a demand for renewal.

Butey’s blunt critique highlights a pivotal moment for the NPP. Political analysts note that such public dissension within a major party often signals either a transformative phase or further fragmentation. Historically, parties that swiftly address internal accountability after electoral setbacks tend to recover more effectively. However, the NPP’s ability to unite behind a reformed leadership structure without prolonged infighting will determine its readiness to reclaim public trust ahead of future elections.
