Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah has completed a move to Bundesliga side FC Köln on a free transfer after leaving French Ligue 1 outfit AJ Auxerre.

The Ghana international has signed a two-year contract with the German club, keeping him at the RheinEnergie Stadion until 2028 as he embarks on a new chapter in his career.

Mensah joins Köln following an impressive 2025/26 campaign with Auxerre, where he made 31 appearances in all competitions before becoming a free agent at the end of his contract.

The 27-year-old also featured prominently for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing in all four matches as the Black Stars reached the Round of 32 for the first time since 2010 before bowing out to Colombia.

The move marks a return to familiar territory for the left-back, who previously played in Germany during a loan spell with Greuther Fürth. He also spent time with FC Liefering, the partner club of Austrian giants RB Salzburg, earlier in his career.

Mensah is expected to bring experience and quality to FC Köln’s backline as the Bundesliga side prepares for the 2026/27 season, while the Ghanaian will be hoping to establish himself as a key figure at his new club.
