Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a lecturer at the Central University, has questioned the logic in the decision by the management of Adisadel College to suspend a housemaster at the school over the violent fight between two of their students.
The students’ scuffle, which was videoed and leaked to the public, saw one of them holding the neck of the other as though to strangulate him and later hit the victim’s head on a bunk bed.
The victim, who struggled to free himself from the grip of his perpetrator, had a swollen cheek as a result of the impact.
Following the incident that occurred in a dormitory at Quaque House of the Adisadel College, the management suspended both students and the housemaster named Ekow Holman.
But Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah finds it disturbing that the housemaster would be punished for what he believes is no fault of his.
He noted that reports indicate the students lied about the incident after the housemaster got a wind of it and inquired from them.
They are said to have told the housemaster that they were playing and one got hurt in the process.
In respect of this, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah slammed the authorities of the College for suspending the housemaster saying “there are some people who will refuse to take up the position of a housemaster. The work of a housemaster is very difficult”.
“How is it like to even monitor your three children; talk of putting all these many children in one house and you being told to supervise them? Your own report indicates that they lied to the housemaster that they were playing and the boy got hurt. On what basis do you suspend the housemaster?”, he further queried.
To him, if care is not taken, teachers may become lame in responding to incidents involving their students to avoid being punished for something that is not their fault.
“We should be careful about the way we gagging teachers,” he warned.
