The Member of Parliament for Effia, Lawyer Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, has raised concerns over the legality and fairness of the newly constituted Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Speaking on the Yɛn Nsɛmpa Morning Show on Onua 95.1 FM with Nana Yaa Brefo Danso on January 15, the legislator questioned the true intentions behind the initiative, suggesting it lacks legal backing and appears to be politically motivated.
“What is the legal framework for this ORAL initiative? If it’s truly about recovering state assets, what is the time frame for its operations? Does it cover the NDC administrations, or is it only targeting the Akufo-Addo regime? If that’s the case, then it’s nothing but a witch hunt,” he argued.
Boamah-Nyarko pointed out that the issue of the sale and purchase of state lands and assets has been a longstanding national concern, not limited to the Akufo-Addo administration.
“Under former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, and even John Mahama’s first term, we heard reports about the sale of state assets, including vehicles, to ministers and cronies. Will those also be recovered? If we all agree this is a national issue, then let’s tackle it holistically and fairly,” he added.
The MP stressed that while recovering state assets is a worthy cause, the approach must be fair, transparent, and free from partisan bias. He urged the government to focus on creating a non-political framework to address such national issues to avoid undermining public confidence in governance.
ORAL was announced by President Mahama as part of efforts to clamp down on corruption and reclaim state properties allegedly misappropriated or wrongfully acquired by public officials.
However, critics like Boamah-Nyarko believe the initiative is skewed towards targeting political opponents rather than addressing systemic corruption across the board.
