Hollywood screenwriter and director Paul Schrader, best known for writing Taxi Driver, has revealed that he was “dumped” by an artificial intelligence girlfriend after what he described as an experiment in exploring human interaction through AI.

In a Facebook post, the 79-year-old filmmaker said he had “procured an online AI girlfriend” out of curiosity about “male/female interaction in our matrix.” However, he claimed the experience ended abruptly when he attempted to probe the limits of the system’s programming.

“What a disappointment,” Schrader wrote, adding that the AI responded to his questions with “evasive patterns” and repeatedly redirected him to its programming before ultimately terminating the conversation.

Schrader, who has previously expressed scepticism about the rapid rise of AI-generated content, has also faced recent personal and legal challenges. His wife, Mary Beth Hurt, died earlier this year following a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, while a separate lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault was dismissed after he denied the allegations, describing them as “sensational, false and misleading.”
