The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has released a parcel of land to the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) for the development of housing units in Kumasi.

President John Dramani Mahama announced this at a sod-cutting ceremony to signal the commencement of construction works on the Green City Housing Project at Dedesua, near Kumasi, on Saturday.

The over 1,000-housing-unit project is sited on a 200-acre tract of land at Dedesua in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, which was generously made available by the Asantehene to the Government.

The project is being executed by the State Housing Company Limited (SHCL).

President Mahama explained that the operations of the TDC were not confined to Tema but extended across the country.

He recalled that in 2025, he performed a sod-cutting ceremony for TDC’s Oxygen City Housing Project in Ho, the Volta Regional capital.

“When you hear Tema Development Corporation, it does not mean that they operate only in Tema. They are spreading across the country,” the President said.

“A few months ago, we were in Ho to cut the sod for a new housing project, and the next destination is Ashanti.”

The President expressed appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for releasing parcels of land for both the Green City Housing Project and the TDC housing project in Kumasi.

“Housing is dignity expressed in concrete and iron. It is the foundation upon which communities grow and nations thrive,” President Mahama said.

“When we house our people well, we unlock their full potential. The Reset Agenda for housing is deliberate and determined.”

He said step by step and community by community, the Government was building a future defined not by shortage, but by shared prosperity, adding that the Green City Housing Project was a strong signal of that future.

“And as we break ground today, let us do so with confidence in our resolve and faith in our collective ability to build not only homes but better lives,” he stated.

President Mahama commended Mr John Sheriff Bawah, the Managing Director of SHCL, and his management team for revitalising the country’s premier housing developer.

He noted that since independence, the State Housing Company had been the largest single provider of housing units to Ghanaians over the past 70 years.

The President reiterated Government’s commitment to supporting SHCL to deliver affordable housing across all regions of the country.

In response to an appeal by the SHCL Managing Director, the President directed the Minister of Roads and Highways to absorb the cost of constructing roads and drainage systems at the Green City project site under the Government’s flagship infrastructure programme, the Big Push.

“…If we don’t do that, we will have to add the cost onto the houses and that makes the houses more expensive,” the President said

“So the government will take up under the big push the cost of building all the roads, gutters and drains in this estate. So that SHC can deliver the houses at a more affordable cost.”

Daasebre Osei Bonsu III, the Mamponghene, who represented the Asantehene, cautioned that any attempt by individuals to sabotage the project would be sternly dealt with.
