Former Asante Kotoko coach Paa Kwesi Fabin has admitted that it was difficult to turn down Legon Cities’ offer despite his initial plan to take stay away from top-flight football for a while.

Fabin had been with Aduana Stars where he led them to a second-place finish last season despite leading the table for a large part of the campaign, and wanted to begin talent development but has ended up with the Accra-based club.

Ghana Premier League side unveiled the veteran coach as the new coach for the upcoming season on Tuesday.

“After leaving my previous club [Aduana Stars], I wanted to stay off for a while and start my own academy but when Legon Cities FC called, it was difficult to say no. I am excited to be here and start this new challenge. I look forward to a fruitful season together with the management and everyone connected here,” he said.

He has joined the Royals on a two-year deal and is expected to elevate the club in the new season.

He replaces former Black Galaxies coach Maxwell Konadu who led the club to a 9th-place finish in last season’s Ghana Premier League campaign.

The 64-year-old joins with a wealth of experience having coached Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak as well as various national teams including Black Starlets, Black Meteors and Uganda national youth teams.

“We will be competitive. We will fight for a respectable position. We will protect the club’s reputation. We will also groom young players and market them as well, Fabin added.

“We have a clear objective on what we want to do here at Legon Cities FC. Things will have to be different this time around. We can’t finish 9th again.

“We have to improve the team together and do a lot of work. I have only officially started work on Monday but there are over 100 players who have arrived for justify at the training grounds, so this should tell you something,” he added.

Legon Cities will begin their Ghana Premier League campaign with a clash against Karela United.
