Yusif Sulemana, Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi and Ranking Member on the Trade and Industry Committee, has expressed concern over the government’s undisclosed plans to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to West Africa Agro Limited, an Indian-based firm, for 15 to 20 years.

The Komenda Sugar Factory, a national asset established in 1964 and undergoing a test run, has faced operational challenges and production halts despite past investments from the Indian Export-Import Bank and previous administrations. Its potential closure is a matter of national concern.

During a recent factory tour, Minister of Trade and Industry Kobina Tahiru Hammond announced the government’s intention to lease the factory to West Africa Agro Limited, citing aims to revive operations to meet domestic demand. The lease terms reportedly include renewal options. This move, if successful, could bring in new technology and expertise, but it also raises concerns about the potential loss of local jobs and control over a key national asset.

Mr. Sulemana objected, stating that Parliament should have been formally notified of this decision. He emphasized the need for parliamentary oversight on matters concerning the factory and called for Minister K.T. Hammond to be summoned to provide clarifications.

Due to Parliament’s recess, Mr. Sulemana indicated plans to address the issue further and seek accountability from the Trade Minister regarding the leasing arrangement.

He underscored that the Komenda Sugar Factory’s objectives have not been achieved under the current government’s oversight, underscoring the importance of transparency and parliamentary involvement in decisions affecting its operations. Reiterating the need for transparency should reassure the public of the government’s commitment to open governance.
