The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana (PMAG) and the Small-Scale Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana (SSPMAG) have received office furniture and IT equipment to enhance their operational capacity and service delivery to members.
The handover took place on the 23rd of April 2026 at the PMAG office in Accra and brought together representatives from the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry (MoTAI), the private sector, and international partners.
The equipment—valued at approximately GHS 530,000 (around EUR 42,000)—was provided through the PharmaVax Ghana Programme. The support forms part of a broader multi-partner collaboration co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) under the Team Europe Initiative MAV+ (Access to Vaccines, Medicines and Health Technologies in Africa) and is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
As key representatives of Ghana’s pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, PMAG and SSPMAG play a central role in strengthening local production.
PMAG represents around 40 medium- to large-scale manufacturers and actively advocates for an enabling policy environment, engages with government and regulatory authorities, and promotes high quality and manufacturing standards across the industry. The association also supports its members through training, industry coordination, and opportunities for collaboration and business development.
SSPMAG represents approximately 120 small-scale pharmaceutical manufacturers across the country, particularly those producing essential over-the-counter medicines. The association works to strengthen its members through capacity building, technical support, and collective representation, while promoting compliance with regulatory standards and improving access to affordable medicines at community level.
Together, both organisations are critical to advancing Ghana’s ambition to expand domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports.
The newly handed-over equipment—including office furniture, desktop computers, laptops, printers, and digital communication tools—aims to improve the working environment and digital capabilities of both associations’ secretariats. This is expected to enable more efficient coordination, stronger advocacy, and enhanced services for their member companies.
The equipment was handed over by Johanna Klotz, Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy in Accra, and Timothy Dolan, Team Leader at the Delegation of the European Union to Ghana. PMAG was represented by its President, Dr. Samuel Tobbin, and other members of the Executive Committee, while SSPMAG was represented by Dr. Kwame Asante and Dr. David Addo.
The support forms part of broader efforts under the PharmaVax Ghana Programme to strengthen the pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem, with a particular emphasis on empowering private sector organisations. By reinforcing the institutional capacity of PMAG and SSPMAG, the programme contributes to building a more resilient and competitive pharmaceutical sector in Ghana.
The initiative reflects the strong partnership between Ghana, Germany, and the European Union in promoting sustainable industrial development. Strengthening industry associations is seen as a key lever for improving access to quality medicines, fostering job creation, and driving long-term sector growth.
The handover ceremony was followed by a visit to the production facilities of Entrance Pharmaceuticals & Research Center, one of Ghana’s leading pharmaceutical manufacturers.
