Professor Olufemi Adebowale Abass has been appointed as the incoming Director General and Head of Mission of the Banjul, The Gambia headquartered West African Insurance Institute, the regional insurance training institute established with support from West African governments and UNCTAD. He will start work as the Director General designate on October 1, 2026 and will assume office as Director General and Head of Mission from January 1, 2027.
Olufemi Abass is a Professor of Risk Management and Insurance and a former Acting Head, Department of Insurance, Faculty of Management Sciences, at the Lagos State University (LASU), in Nigeria. Currently he is the Director of LASU Ventures Limited.
He holds a BSc. Degree in Insurance from LASU, obtained in 2005. He then proceeded to the University of Lagos where he secured an MSc. In Business Administration and a PhD in Risk Management and Insurance in 2009 and 2018 respectively. He shares a rare privilege to be in the first set of PhD holders in Risk Management and Insurance to be produced from any Nigerian university.
Professor Olufemi Abass is an Associate of both the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (AIIN) and the Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (ACIB). He is a member of the Accreditation Committee of AIIN. He is also an accredited trainer for the International Labour Organization (ILO), Impact Insurance Facility and also the United Nations Development Programme (Insurance and Risk Financing) where he teaches inclusive insurance.
