Head of Planning, Research, and Policy Development, at the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Dr. Emmanuel Newman has called for an increase in the amount of loans given by Students Loan Trust Fund to students. This would enable beneficiaries to take care of themselves.

Mr Emmanuel Newman also recommended that research allowances for lecturers be paid based on research outcomes, as some lecturers receive the allowance without engaging in any research work.

Dr. Newman shared these insights during a panel discussion on “Innovative Financing for Tertiary Education” at the National Education Week Summit held in Accra, focusing on the theme “Education Delivery for National Transformation: the case for STEM and TVET.”

Meanwhile, Senior Lecturer at GIMPA, Dr. Randof Nso Ambala, claimed that Ghana has not fully embraced the concept of innovative financing.

Senior Lecturer from the University for Development Studies, Professor Ibrahim Mohammed Gunu, also urge the government to grant tax-free relief to organizations providing financial support to tertiary education students.

He further emphasized the need for an increased funding in the education sector to combat education poverty.
