Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has written his name into Ghana’s football history books after becoming the first Black Stars goalkeeper to record back-to-back clean sheets at the FIFA World Cup.

The shot-stopper achieved the remarkable feat during Ghana’s opening two matches of the 2026 World Cup against Panama and England.

Asare first featured in the Black Stars’ 1-0 victory over Panama, coming on at halftime to replace injured Lawrence Ati-Zigi and helping preserve Ghana’s lead with a solid second-half display.

The 33-year-old was then handed a starting role against England and produced another assured performance as Ghana held the Three Lions to a goalless draw at Gillette Stadium.

His clean sheet against England ensured that Ghana remained unbeaten and without conceding a goal after two matches, boosting the team’s chances of reaching the knockout stage.

The achievement is particularly significant given Ghana’s rich World Cup history. Since making their tournament debut in 2006, no Black Stars goalkeeper had managed to keep clean sheets in consecutive World Cup matches.

Previous goalkeepers including Richard Kingson, Adam Kwarasey, Fatau Dauda, Lawrence Ati-Zigi and others were unable to accomplish the feat across Ghana’s appearances in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022.

Asare’s impressive performances have not only strengthened Ghana’s campaign in the United States, Canada and Mexico but have also secured his place in the record books as the first Black Stars goalkeeper to register back-to-back World Cup clean sheets.

The Black Stars will hope their in-form goalkeeper can continue his outstanding run when they face Croatia in their final Group L match on June 27.
