According to Speaker Alban Bagbin, the ongoing retrofitting of the Ghanaian Parliament chamber will cost €2.26 million, and the Government of Ghana will cover the expense.

The refurbishment includes replacing damaged desks and worktables, while new chairs will be sourced locally. The old furniture will be auctioned off.

The retrofitting began approximately two weeks ago, and the chamber has been cleared of its previous furnishings.

Rewiring is underway to accommodate a new conferencing system. Speaker Bagbin has been actively inspecting the progress of the renovations, which are expected to result in a revamped chamber complete with new furniture.

This renovation follows the 2014 refurbishment, which included new furniture imported from China.

The previous setup was criticized by taxpayers and had issues with functionality, particularly with the tablets installed on MPs’ desks and a frequently malfunctioning microphone system.

Bagbin noted that the chamber’s retrofitting will delay the anticipated September recall of Parliament.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of October.

If Parliament resumes its sessions in October as planned, members will experience the updated chamber in preparation for the 9th Parliament, set to convene in January 2025.
